Thirty-six residents from Pataskala and surrounding areas braved the cold and falling snow Jan. 12 to attend the first of six “vegetable gardening” classes in Pataskala.
The Pataskala Parks and Recreation Department has partnered with Licking County Master Gardeners through the OSU Extension Program to help provide active living resources and researched-based outdoor gardening education.
If you are interested in gardening and would like to learn and be involved in the movement towards a healthier lifestyle and building community pride rec department wants you, according to a news release.
The mission is to strengthen our neighborhoods by maintaining a community gardens that provide a common ground for neighborhood members to garden together and get to know each other, according to the release.
Doing this will allow the residents of Pataskala to create a healthy community through sustainable living, outdoor education. The community garden will be developed and maintained by the department with the help of plot renters.
Vision for a Community Gardening Program
•Provide education for youth about gardening and the importance of sustainability and the environment we have in Pataskala.
•Creating a healthy community by offering access to healthy food choices and active living resources.
Community gardens offer residents a shared green space and fresh food that will eventually contribute to improved health, improved quality of life for all demographics and unique experiences that will help develop life skills all people should possess.

The next “Vegetable Garden Class” is set for 9:30-11 a.m. Feb. 2 at the Pataskala United Methodist Church, 458 S. Main St.
